Busy, busy

I had an extremely busy day today — barely any time to eat. It went like this:

*chicken byproduct on a bun at about 1:30 this afternoon from the dolla menu

*12-inch turkey and Swiss Subway sandwich at about 8 p.m. (I was so hungry but only ate half, if that. It was sort  of gross.)

*McD’s vanilla cone

Whew. I still have a few things to do but hope to get to bed by 12:30 or 1. Night!

The first step: admitting you have a problem

If you don’t know what I’m referring to, skip down and see the last photo please :-)

I know this is gonna seem weird, but it’s good. I also like to eat plain spaghetti noodles and other pasta this way. For lunch I had brown rice with lots and lots of hot sauce (more added after the photo) with butter. Mmmm.

cimg4091

Later I had a literal mess of hard-boiled egg whites for protein.

cimg4095

For dinner we had a baked potato bar. Mine was a potato (x2, the first was on a tiny bed of Romaine, just so I could say I got some green in today), cheese, sour cream, onion, and salt and pepper. Nom nom nom nom.

cimg4146

Ahhhhh. Addiction is so ugly. At least I lasted ’til 4. I should get points for that. But I should probably get points taken away because, like a true crackhead, I braved the rain and lightning and everything else between me and the Golden Arches for it.

cimg4096

And it figures that the temperature got down to a cool 80 degrees by 5:30 (because it rained late this afternoon) — perfect post-work running weather, well at least as good as it gets in the summertime. Today was supposed to be yoga day (gonna skip it — shoulder/neck isn’t any better) and a rest day from the running schedule. Tomorrow it’s gonna be blazin’ arse hot I’m sure and my skin is probably either gonna melt and slide off or sizzle up like bacon within the first mile.

Now for dish washing then shower and reading. Hasta luego.

McSteamy

That pretty much sums up my day.

This evening, I got to run in the steam. I ignored the shoulder/neck problem (which still isn’t any better than yesterday, boo) and went out for a trail run.

No kidding, it started pouring as soon as Kevin turned off the ignition and I was getting ready to get out. This was at around 6:30 (according to one of those temperature sign things that we passed, it was 87 degrees). I like to run in the rain but it’s more enjoyable when it’s a light drizzle and you’re not carrying a bunch of electronics with you. So we decided to wait a little while since the sky was reasonably bright and blue and it looked like the rain wouldn’t last. I got a baked potato from Wendy’s for a pre-run snack and the rain had stopped by the time we came back. Actually, it stopped by the time we got less than a mile from where we parked to go run. Oh well. I did the final run of the first week (!) of the training plan. It’s only taken me three weeks. I did some repeat workouts from the week one schedule along the way so it should be fine. The run wasn’t too terribly hot (it cooled down a little bit after the rain) but it was rather steamy. That air was thick.

And for the “Mc” part: Let me just say that this iced coffee addiction is stronger than any budget I can come up with. Ha ha. From the Arches I also got some sort of chicken byproduct off the dollar menu. Ewww. But I was out and about and hungry and had to make up the cost since I was spending a small fortune on a big iced coffee :-) I will have to curb this habit quite a bit though because of the budget issue. That’s not a bad thing because I shouldn’t be drinking them anyway. At least that’s what I’ll tell myself :-)

For dinner we had some vegetables with soba noodles and stir-fry sauce that I threw together from stuff we already had in the fridge. I also attempted a carrot cake inspired smoothie this morning but it was a flop. I didn’t drink it but I have ideas for another experiment along those lines.

You might be wondering where the pictures are of the above-mentioned McMeals, etc. are. Well, my camera battery has been dead all day and I left the charger at work so I was out of luck.

This week I’m going to make dinners mostly from food we already have here. I think I have to now to make up for my McWeakness as of late.  There isn’t much here at home, but I discovered there’re a lot more possibilities once I started looking in the cabinets and freezer than I thought. We’re likely having chicken ‘n’ rice, spaghetti, and beans of some sort for dinner this week. Kevin also requested a baked potato bar, which is funny because he’s never liked baked potatoes before. I couldn’t be happier since loaded baked potatoes are a favorite of mine. Yum.

Yoga might be on the agenda tomorrow.

Oh, and, in the name of frugality, we have decided not to renew our gym membership this month. No more creepy guys in cowboy boots or plumbers in the shower or nekkid old ladies. Darn. (Although that does make for good blog fodder.) What I will miss are the Spin classes, swimming pool, and … I think that might be it.  So for now, I’m going to be doing more run/walking (hopefully just running soon if my legs hold up — please, please, please), yoga, and bodyweight strength moves.

That’s all for now. I’m still waiting to see if anybody has any suggestions for cheap meal ideas :-) Have a great Monday!

Sunday thanks:

  • trails
  • quiet mornings
  • rain
  • noodles and any kind of pasta (have I mentioned that one already?)
  • mi familia (I know I’ve said this but I wanna say it again)

Is that a little bird I hear?

Cheap cheap cheap.

Hello, people of the Interwebbertubes. I hope everybody’s having a great weekend doing great weekend-y things.

I wanted to run today but I am even more Frankenstein-y than yesterday. Bummer. But I am being a trouper and continuing to blog today anyway because there is food to be talked about and pictures to be posted.

First, an almond butter and jelly sandwich …

cimg4073

Some more of these, what little there were left. Both of these containers (almond butter and dates, if you can’t tell from the photo) were full on Wednesday. For shame.

cimg4078

And this. Mmmm.

cimg4084

And then, the anti-fresh (warning: thick grease ahead).

cimg4085

I had three slices, which was okay at the time but now, four hours later, I’ve got that bad, too-much-greasy-pizza feeling. This meal gets a D- in the healthy food department. However, it gets an A for cheapness. That’s right, this Little Caesar’s pizza (pepperoni, large — I picked the pepperoni off because I’m pretty much not eating pork or beef) was just $5 and 80-something cents. That’s less than three dollars per person for dinner (it was just the two of us). It’s a fact that makes me smile.

It’s hard to beat that for eating out. Given my choice though, I would much rather make a pizza at home not just because it would be healthier but because it would taste loads better.

Tonight’s dinner choice is a reflection of our decision to embark on a little extreme food budget experiment. I got crazy and tallied up an estimate of what we spent on food last month and instantly got queasy. Then I hatched a plan for the month of August and have since been nerding out over numbers and food lists. Things are likely going to get interesting around here food-wise. Not interesting in a way that a reader might say, “Ooh that looks interesting, I think I’ll try that.” It’ll probably be more like “Oh my. That looks … interesting.”

Ha ha.

I am currently making a list of potential cheap meals. Does anyone have suggestions for inexpensive meals that are reasonably healthful, I mean beyond the standard rice and beans? I would love to hear your ideas :-)

Pad Thai-erd

I’m soo tired right now. It’s after midnight and this is the first time I’ve been home all day. Kevin and I (and Lil’ B-rit) rushed to Jam-lando after work to pick up some items from a camera store tonight. Afterward, at around 9, we went to Pei Wei.

I got Pad Thai. Good but very greasy. Sorry for the bad photo. It was rather dark inside and I wasn’t about to use the flash.

cimg3609

Then we hit the McD’s for vanilla cones. At 150 calories, this is not a bad dessert by any means.

Earlier today I had leftovers of my meatless, taco-less taco salad (spring mix, cheese, jalapenos, corn, nonfat plain yogurt, salsa, and seasoned pinto beans). What a difference good lighting makes.

cimg3587

And I had about five of B-rit’s Swedish Fish on the way to Jam-lando. When we got there it was almost 8 p.m. and I had some of her fries. At that hour it was going to either be this or my fingers. I made the right choice.

cimg3597 cimg3601

I wanted to do my newest yoga download today, an hour-long Dave Farmar one, but it’s obviously way too late now. I am going to read some, if I can keep my eyes open long enough, and call it a day.

Hope everyone has a lovely Saturday!

ouch

Happy Sunday! Well, what’s left of it. Here’re some photos of food today. Nothing exciting, but in the name of consistency, here they are.

Long, long errands + not many eating places to choose from = my go-to fast food

cimg3459

… which kind of grossed me out today. Without going into too much detail, it wasn’t so much the sandwich as two people who were in there when I was ordering. Oh well. Restaurant choices in our immediate area are limited to say the least.

We also had some ice cream and an iced coffee (not shown- Kevin, B-rit and I treated ourselves to single scoops on cones). I would have taken a photo but the ice cream was melting fast and the camera was out in the car.

Post-grocery shop meal/snack. Before and after.

cimg3463 cimg3470

I planned to run today but unfortunately, my food and activities have been limited by a headache that started early and settled in for the day, most likely a not-so-gentle reminder to cut back on my sugar intake. Rats. But it is good motivation to eat a cleaner diet.

Now I am brewing a cup of tea and swiping some of Lil’ B-rit’s honey mustard pretzels. Oh yes, as I was saying. The cleaner diet …

I did find this little training plan for people recovering from a running injury. This is supposed to be for stress fractures but I think it might work for me. I’m not crazy about the run/walk stuff but I’m not getting anywhere with my current non-plan and this might be what I need. I think I might try it this week.

Sunday thanks (more here and here):

  • infrequent headaches
  • grocery stores
  • flip-flops
  • no hurricanes so far this season (fingers crossed)

Well, that’s all for now. Hopefully I’ll feel better in the a.m. and be in the gym early. We shall see. G’night.
